What N.I.C.E. Day is About
The deepest principle of human nature is the need to be appreciated.
Teen-agers especially, who already feel awkward in their adolescent
growth, need someone to notice that they have some skills, and
some things that they are good at. Staff members in a work situation
need compliments. We know that there is an increase in self-worth
wherever there is a pleasant atmosphere. In your job, at school,
with your coworkers, or with a client, you never know what kind
of a day that person might be having and when you might be catching
them at a crucial point in their life, where a good word will
make the all the difference. Even if all you want to do is change
the behavior of someone you come in contact with, give them a
compliment. It changes behavior. It lifts their spirit.
How does giving compliments help the well being
of a person? It's because positive attitudes given and received
lead to better health, including better physical health. People
who have a positive outlook have a better healing rate. People
who have a positive outlook seem to have the ability to deal better
with even the most grim situation. Negative attitudes and pessimism
are associated with slower recovery, ill health, and more difficulty
coping.
